planet rhythm usual yan cook teams up with fellow ukranian artist mays for a tough collaboration record named “old friend ep”. on the opening-track “fixed” the tone is being set for this being an utter dancefloor effort with the extended use of fx and modulation. “old friend” resumes in this fashion bringing a glitchy atmosphere of some kind together with matches chords and outlandish drum work. the b-side opens up with the futuristic tones of “coder” which is based around tough synth arpeggiators and ferocious kick drums. “tesla” continues down the road of futuristic techno with it’s strong and extended fx works and intrusive synthesizer sounds.

for organ and brass is comprised of two works by the stockholm-based composer ellen arkbro. both works focus on tuning, intonation and harmonic modulation. in previous projects, arkbro composed for early music ensembles, wrote a series of durational pieces utilising synthetic tones and processed guitars, and, most recently, presented a work lasting 26 days at the stockholm concert hall. for organ and brass looks back to arkbro’s studies in just intonation with la monte young, marian zazeela, and their disciple jung hee choi in new york, as well as with kindred spirit marc sabat in berlin.

multi instrumentalist and deep house master lars bartkuhn returns to utopia records following his nomad ep in april with a 10 minute masterpiece, an ode to the massai . an epic journey of such depth and positive spirit it perhaps deserves to render a genre all to itself. with its musicality, complex arrangement and phrasing massai is a timeless and personal statement from bartkuhn as he seeks the essence in what dance music can and possibly should be. as a young child growing up in frankfurt, bartkuhn penned his first pieces of music with a synthesizer and sequencer, bought for him by his parents upon realising their son s obsession with music. mastering the guitar as a teenager bartkuhn fell deeply in love with the music of pat metheny, keith jarrett and john coltrane and styles such as soul, funk, brasilian sounds, minimal, dance, and others which is heard in his music today. by the mid 90 s bartkuhn began to explore the deep and soulful side of house music and formed lamaya productions and the now legendary record label needs (not wants) together with his older brother marek bartkuhn and dj yannick. needs rapidly became a synonym for soulful, high quality music and while labeled a house music imprint it was lars input that lead the trio to explore alternative, and at the time unorthodox, musical influences that allowed for original textures and arrangements to be included in their productions. countless remix commissions followed and their sound travelled worldwide with works for francois kevorkian, jazztronik, ennio morricone, atjazz to name a few. to date bartkuhn has produced five solo albums all of which demonstrate a never ending creative flow of ideas and artistic diversity, complexity and passion. after some years away from the dance music scene, residing in brasil, lars decided to continue this journey on volcov s neroli records, followed by a 12- for alex bradley s phonica affiliated utopia records. the latter release, nomad has found its way into the sets of the likes of jeremy underground paris, hunee, antal, ron trent, rainer truby, bicep and mcde to name just a few. it s at this point that bartkuhn gives us massai...his self proclaimed finest work

* nan kolé, producer, dj and head of influential label on-the-rise, gqom oh!, returns to black acre for his debut proper with ‘bayefal’, after first collaborating with nervous horizon’s wallwork on his ‘facts / fyah’ 12” at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome, although now a resident of london, nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban’s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label, gqom oh!, he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban, unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * ‘bayefal’, he explains, was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup, which consisted of an italo-liberian singer, karima 2g, and senegalese percussionist and singer, moustapha mbengue. “for me, he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally”, kolé explains, “and without his hard work i wouldn’t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him, as he s a muslim bayefal.” a joyous, steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit, ‘bayefal’ also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically, the gqom sound. * on the flip, ‘malumz’ — backed up with two dark, brooding remixes by durban’s citizen boy and crew, formation boyz — is another track rooted in personal experience. “malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family”, kolé explains. “they call me malumz, which in zulu means ‘uncle’. the first time citizen boy called me ‘malumz’, it was overwhelming — i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys, because they started to treat me more as a family member, which meant a lot.” * the original mix, a stark, pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé’s fascination with the gqom sound, while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip ‘malumz’ with harsher, grittier tones and crunching, industrial textures.

figure 86 finds the label’s headmaster revisiting a dormant classic from 2005, delivering two extended excursions that pick up on the lunatic vibe instilled by the original while each mix provides for a uniquely new experience. sitting on the record’s a-side is the hardspace mix, a sparse and bone dry rhythmic affair, built around the originals characteristic cut-up vocal sample. a hammering thump carries along the track relentlessly, the air of oppression created only amplified by a heavy assault of clangig claps. the digital bundle comes with an even more stripped-back hardspace tool version, making it an excellent surprise to throw in and out of mixes. on the flip faki takes opportunity to show us one of his lesser known sides, taking time to gently develop this deepspace mix into a meandering meditative journey. trading in the vocal for a spaced-out synth opens the track up for the shifting tribal drums to truly work their magic and makes this piece of music feel equally mysterious as it sways with cosmic energy.

it’s safe to say this release marks heist’s most international endeavor so far: next up we’ve got alma negra, 4 guys with roots in portugal, cabo verde, italy and spain, hailing from switzerland. they’re putting out an african influenced ep with german detroit afficionado soulphiction involved for a remix. afro lovers will probably know alma negra because of their great work on highlife, sofrito or basic fingers and we’ve been in touch with them for a long time to make this release happen. their 3 originals are a great showcase of their skills, blending traditional african music with contemporary house and techno.

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.

gents & dandy s are finally back with a 3rd limited 12- vinyl release and this time it s an artist ep by the hands of the greece, athens based achilleas dimitracopoulos, better known as fog. he s contributed to the house music movement since the late 90s and has previously released on labels like noir music, dieb audio, apparel music, seven music, and just recently suena hermosa. collaborations and remix work happened for kindimmer, patrick zigon or even kruse & nuernberg to name just a few.

2lp vinyl printed gatefold, includes cd! cd edition and cd included in the 2xlp feature the same tracks in the same order. this is a clear perspective on comelade’s musical universe and can be considered as an ultimate “best of” and a radical introduction tothis chaotic and uncompromising instrumental music. rocanrolorama abrégé (-abbreviated rockandrolorama-, in english) is the short version of the complete works and reworks of pascal comelade published at the end of 2016 as a 6-cd box set in a sold-out limited edition of 1000 numbered and signed copies. pascal comelade made this album as if it was a new and separate album, with tracks that he considers best represent his work, from 1993 to 2016, according to the principle applied with the rocanrolorama box set: songs in their original form, alternative versions, reworks, additions… this short version was conceived especially for a double vinyl lp format: four sides with six tracks each, which you can listen to in the right order, from start to finish, according to a logical, thought-out progression for each side (slow tempo, medium tempo, orchestrations, electricity, etc.)

after multiple cassette and 12” releases through kastil’s stale in 2016, it’s time for irazu’s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. “shtamm” is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. “refused to be found” is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through “shtamm”. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. “last hours” is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of “shtamm”. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. “torso” is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

any disco dj worth their weight in vinyl knows the name donnell pitman, and until now this has been mostly due to his highly sought after work of the late 70s and early 80s. renewed interest in donnell has reached critical peak over the past few years, fueled by red greg’s feature of donnell’s seminal “love explosion” on joey negro’s under the influence vinyl compilation series and chicago’s numero group putting out long forgotten, unreleased boogie bangers “burning up” and “taste of honey” in 2015.
it was this refreshed enthusiasm that caught the attention of producer kumar mcmillian of chicago-based disco ensemble wings of sunshine. kumar’s group was looking for another vocal collaborator following their 7” debut release on star creature records. a casual introduction led to an informal studio session between the two culminating in a modern disco masterpiece.

ryogo yamamori announced the start of a new imprint called kagerou in 2017, which focus on both digital and analogue releases. first cut ryogo’ssolo shakunetsu e.p. is this low-key tokyo veteran techno artist’s most ethereal work yet.

brainwaltzera debuts on film. the anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british idm auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended ep for the berlin based imprint. in 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 outtake. the move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on film006 are of similarly high calibre. varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba ep, marking it out as an excellent addition to the film labels growing catalogue

this 4-tracker from spanish affkt might quite simply be his best release to date. i have always admired his different and quirky productions and as the followers will know we have released tracks with affkt before.this time me and marc (aka affkt) went deep into a&r ing the release to make sure all tracks reached their full potential. tracks have been added and removed from the release over time. the tracks have been re-arranged, adjusted, revisited over a period of 9 months time (yes thats how much time we spent carefully putting this release together and making sure it was perfect). i am really proud of what marc acomplished with this release on noir music. all 4 tracks work really well in the clubs and they each have a very strong affkt signature which i wont bother describing in detail by words but rather have you listen to these amazing squared pieces.

coverti world can really be no other than danny wolfers aka legowelt of course. his first tape for new york haunted is a stone cold classic with heavy machinery, acidic lines and his typical haunting melodies. there is a melancholic, almost saw type feel on these tracks, which might be his best work to date. 8 cuts on a 40 minute tape by the master of wavvy techno!

trusme gets the remix treatment from answer code request, ben sims & pangaea. this is the first of two eps featuring remixes of tracks from the trusme planet 4 album. answer code request takes our future into new territory with two outstanding mixes. remix 1 moves things to a much more sinister & foreboding place. tightening the feel & tension of the original with all the hallmarks of classic berlin techno. remix 2 winds up & coils the track into a searing workout of early 90s hardcore breakbeat. ben sims takes control of ring round heart, pushing the tempo & creating a whole new urgency in the track. this is proper no nonsense heads down business & tight as you like. the mix builds excellently well & manages to produce an epic amount of feel and emotion, dropping in & out of the groove with a sneaky breakbeat & vocal dubs. pangaea tackles one of the albums more esoteric tracks in the unexplained. he manages to work a wonderfully intriguing steppers beat which drops from nowhere after the highly beguiling metronomic extended opening. the tracks are getting plenty of play & plaudits from likes of ben ufo, dj deep, bicep & anthony parasole.

tenor singer johnny clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. hanging around studio one as a schoolboy with jacob miller, clarke was supposed to record material written for him by bob andy, but somehow never made the grade. his 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer glen stair was not released, and early work for clancy eccles failed to hit, though ‘everyday wondering’ for rupie edwards made an underground impact in britain and new york. subsequent singles for keith hudson and glen brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when bunny lee asked him to sing ‘none shall escape the judgement,’ which was written by the singer earl zero, it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the soul train theme), and clarke became one of lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because lee stoked a rivalry between him and cornell campbell, whom lee had previously asked to voice ‘none shall escape.’ clarke’s satisfaction lp was recorded at harry j for lee, voiced at king tubby’s studio, and issued by third world in 1979. it is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the paragons’ ‘riding for a fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘my satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘play fool, get wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of kingston.

nyc s legendary west end record label has contributed a fair few classics to the disco cannon and continues to influence dance music today with it s forward looking releases. when you touch me is no exception, recorded and released in the golden year of 1979 and featuring the breathy, sensual vocals of a young tanaa gardner who had previously worked as a backing vocalist for numerous other projects until the label released her (other) stone cold solo classic work that body the same year on 12-. both cuts featured on her self titled debut lp and boasted the combined production and studio talents of kenton nix, bob blank and of course - larry levan. now, that s a serious line-up to have behind the boards (& in the clubs!) and of course when you touch me was a classic with it s slow, elongated intro that calls to mind a sleazier version of donna summer s love hangover before launching into a full-on disco assault that you won t forget in a hurry! yes, the record surprises you, tanaa leads us into a false sense of a slow jam and then - boom - we re off! backed with the incredible instrumental version the 12- is repressed here in it s original 1979 glory, an essential classic that has stood the test of time for the last 30+ years & is now available again, remastered & repressed for 2017 in conjunction with west end records, nyc.

since 2015, james welshs contribution to phantasy as kamera has delivered a series of releases shrouded in mystery, injected with the personal energy of both a hardcore and club heritage. two eps, arc and ventoux, set a distinct tone, with the latter complimented by head-turning remixes from artists such as george fitzgerald, throwing snow, truncate and yaleesa hall. now, the key phantasy artist emerges from the shadows under his own name, in order to continue his uncompromising musical journey. returning with a new, two-track ep, standing/slip captures the finely tuned tension and euphoric release of welshs sound in arguably its strongest form to date, showcasing not only the dancefloor mettle firmly established under his prior alias, but a new sense of wistfulness that coaxes his typically outstanding machine work into altogether more reflective territory. standing throws listeners headlong into welshs formerly anonymous industrial complex, generating a churning, relentless rhythm offset with a dry female vocal that recalls the sardonic stance of vintage electroclash. following this, slip is an initially unexpectedly spectral diversion, transmitting a curious synth line into space, and receiving a choral, sombre frequency in return. without losing its emotive qualities, the track succumbs to a hailstorm of welsh’s sharp, potent drums, before collapsing in understated catharsis.
